Prayer for Success
“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.” In 2000 Bruce Wilkinson published a book based on the above prayer from 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. The book went on to sell nine million copies worldwide.
Prayer for Success – Examples in the Bible
Throughout history humankind has sought to increase its stock through prayer. The Bible provides numerous examples, such as the one above, of believers who had faith and reaped earthly, even monetary, benefits because of it. Praying to God for success is not wrong or inappropriate. However, with a culture full of televangelist focusing their entire ministry on success, it pays to couple those prayers with other elements of Scripture.
Prayer for Success – Some Elements to Consider
The first question to consider is, are we called to be successful? The answer to this question is more complex than it appears. Certainly, our God is not a God of mediocrity. When God called on Noah, Moses, or Gideon to continue the human race, save a nation, and win battles, there was not room for error. God placed so much upon the shoulders of these men because, even though they had doubts, He knew they would trust in Him and call upon His name in times of trouble. The same can be said of us when we seek success. At the same time, success is not our primary call. We are called to spread the Gospel that makes others wise unto salvation. Monetary success falls well below this first call.
The second element to consider is if we even deserve success. Plenty of people have earthly success and are not religious, so clearly the two are not contingent upon one another. Additionally, as clique as it has become, the love of money is the root all evil. Money has a dark history of ripping families and loved ones apart. As Christians, we are called to distance ourselves from such behavior. Praying for success is fully permitted by Scripture, but it should be undertaken with caution and openness. Focus on storing up treasures in heaven, I am sure they last a little longer anyway.
Prayer for Success:
Almighty God, Whose hands hold all matters of life, give me grace of success in the work that I do.
Help me to give it the careful thought and the strict attention that will lead to success.
Watch over me and govern my actions, that I may not mar its perfection.
Show me how to give my best, and let me not despise the toil that is necessary to complete it.
Make my life a successful one, in that every duty You give to me, I do it well. Give me the blessing of
Your help and guidance, and suffer me not to fail.
In Jesus’ name.
